Net-Zero Jobs Boom: Opportunities for Accountancy Professionals

The UK's net-zero economy is rapidly expanding, creating significant job opportunities across renewable energy, green technology, and infrastructure development.

With the UK Government’s strong commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, investment in clean energy is unlocking opportunities for accountancy professionals.

A key initiative driving this growth is Great British Energy (GBE), a publicly owned renewable energy company based in Aberdeen. Launched in 2024, GBE aims to generate 8 GW of power by 2030, investing in offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture, and nuclear energy.

With £8.3 billion in initial funding and plans to attract £60 billion in private investment, experienced and suitably skilled accountancy professionals will be required to help exchange this necessary investment into action.

Skilled accountants are in demand, however there is concern the a skills shortage across green finance will limit progress. “The UK financial services sector faces a substantial green skills gap and is not moving fast enough to close it”, advised PwC.

Our 2025 Trend & Insight Report advises businesses to ensure that their accounting and finance teams are suitably prepared and skilled for the ongoing development and commitments across the UK.

The Net Zero Banking Alliance, for example, boasts 140 banks across 44 countries. All have pledged to align their lending investment, and capital markets activities with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Meanwhile projects like Whitetail Clean Energy in Teesside are also set to create employment in carbon capture and storage, while the National Grid’s decarbonisation plans will require a growing workforce to expand renewable energy capacity and modernise infrastructure.

The transition to net-zero offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for accountancy professionals to help build a sustainable economy across the UK. As businesses and governments continue to invest in green energy, new opportunities for accountancy and finance professionals will help drive the UK’s economic future.
